Mō te tūnga | About the role
We are seeking a Tumu Whakatere | Strategic Programme Manager to join our team at Whakaata Māori. Tumu Whakatere draws from the act of steering the waka — the one responsible for keeping the kaupapa moving forward in alignment with strategy, ensuring progress through deliberate and coordinated motion. In this role, you will lead the implementation of strategic initiatives across Whakaata Māori. The Tumu Whakatere drives planning cycles, transformation programmes, and cross-Ranga priorities — ensuring that outcomes are achieved, delivery remains focused, and strategic intent is translated into meaningful action.

This is a full-time, fixed term position for 12 months, based at our head office in East Tāmaki.  

Ngā kawenga matua | Key responsibilities

  • Lead strategic planning and ensure effective delivery of organisational priorities
  • Provide leadership across transformation and strategic programmes
  • Manage key projects, ensuring alignment with overall strategy
  • Oversee contract management related to strategic initiatives
  • Collaborate with other leaders and stakeholders across the organisation
  • Foster cross-functional alignment to ensure strategic initiatives remain connected, purposeful, and forward-focused

  • Proven ability to lead complex delivery in a cross-functional environment
  • Strong skills in planning, tracking progress, and coordinating stakeholders
  • Adaptable and solution-focused, especially under pressure
  • Confident communicator, capable of conveying complex matters clearly
  • Strong command of te reo me ngā tikanga Māori in both formal and everyday contexts
  • Experience working in kaupapa Māori delivery environments
  • Skilled in tikanga-based engagement
