Te Reo Māori orators turn out for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori live debate

Some of our leading te reo Māori orators will go head to head in a special one-off debate tonight in celebration of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.

“He aha te kai a te rangatira? He kōrero. He kaupapa rawe hei whakanui i tēnei wiki rangatira,” says Shane Taurima, Tāhuhu Rangapū of Māori Television.

‘Te Reo Tautohe’ will be hosted by award-winning broadcaster, Julian Wilcox, and the teams captained by Rāhui Papa (Tainui) and Tāmati Waaka (Tūhoe, Te Whanau a Apanui).

“We are hoping to engage our competent speakers and inspire our learners in a battle of wit and humour,” says Te Atarangi Whiu, Tumu Whakarae of Te Mātāwai.

Speakers include Ruth Smith (Rongowhakaata), Rhonda Tibble (Ngāti Porou), Te Wehi Preston (Tūhoe) and Penetaui Kleskovic (Ngāpuhi, Te Aupouri).

As part of Te Whare O Te Reo Mauriora, Māori Television and Te Mātāwai are committed to working together to revitalise and promote te reo Māori amongst our whānau, hapū, iwi and hapori.

The event will be livestreamed at 7:30pm across multiple platforms, including Te Reo channel, Māori Television and Te Mātāwai social media sites.

Audiences will be invited to engage in the debate by voting online for their favourite team.

This will be a true battle of wit, humour and excellence in te reo Māori – he whakataetae nui e haere ake nei!

Māori Television and Te Mātāwai are supporting Te Wiki o te Reo Māori all week using the hashtags #TWOTRM #TeWikioTeReo & #KiaKahaTeReoMaori.
