‘TĀONE’ COWBOYS SADDLE UP IN ‘GET YOUR LEG OVER’

A fresh new series is set to ride onto screens, celebrating identity, culture, and hōiho, with a healthy dose of humour along the way.

GET YOUR LEG OVER premieres Wednesday 8 July at 7.00PM on Whakaata Māori and MĀORI+.

Kapu Tī Productions’ Executive Producer Michelle Lee describes GET YOUR LEG OVER as a comedic fish-out-of-water series where urban Māori celebrities swap city life for the saddle.

Hosted by the charismatic Lizzie Rangihuna, each episode stars a different matatau ki te reo as they step out of their comfort zone and, quite literally, get a leg over.

From chefs to singers, thrash metallers to powerlifters, audiences can look forward to a brave crop of greenhorns pushing past their comfort zones as these rangatahi Māori return to their hau kāinga, rediscovering connection through horsemanship.

The question remains each week: will they shy away from the challenge, or rise above the neigh-sayers?

In a time where horse culture is experiencing a resurgence, this uniquely Aotearoa take brings a distinctly Māori voice to the trend. With reins in hand, Lizzie leads her guests on a journey filled with challenges, laughter, vulnerability, and the inevitable sore muscles.

GET YOUR LEG OVER is the latest series from a trusted Māori production company with over 15 years of experience delivering authentic, high-quality shows with horses taking the stage front and centre. Past series include Native Ride, Hōiho, and Hōiho – Riding On.

COMING UP ON GET YOUR LEG OVER:

EPISODE 1: WEDNESDAY 8 JULY – Pairama Wright (Ngāi Tahu, Ngā Ruahine) – Lizzie Rangihuna kicks off the series with Pairama Wright, the TikTok cooking sensation with more than half a million followers. Will he take the reins with confidence, or will it be a recipe for disaster?

EPISODE TWO: WEDNESDAY 15 JULY – Māhinarangi Lawrence (Ngāti Kahungunu) – Lizzie meets the talented Kahungunu singer-songwriter whose voice has earned her a loyal following. Used to finding rhythm on stage, Māhina now must find harmony with her four-legged duet partner.

EPISODE THREE: WEDNESDAY 22 JULY – Shiray & Gillies Kākā (Kākā Whānau) – This charismatic duo swap the international rugby field for the saddle. Their bond is put to the test as they navigate trust, communication, and coordination in an entirely new arena.

EPISODE FOUR: WEDNESDAY  29 JULY – Rezin Barber (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāi Tahu) – Content creation comes naturally to Rezin – but horses are another story. Authenticity quickly outweighs online influence when faced with a living, breathing challenge.

EPISODE FIVE: WEDNESDAY 5 AUGUST – Montel Tivoli (Ngāti Porou, Te Aupouri, Ngāti Hamoa) – The powerhouse athlete learns that physical strength isn’t everything. Patience, balance, and connection take centre stage as he steps into the saddle.

EPISODE SIX: WEDNESDAY 12 AUGUST – Cruz Ihaia (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Maniapoto) – Entrepreneur and community leader Harlem-Cruz juggles it all—until now. Will she reign supreme in the saddle, or meet her match?

EPISODE SEVEN: WEDNESDAY 19 AUGUST – Pere Wihongi (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kuri, Ngāti Wai) – A master of rhythm through kapa haka, Pere trades the Te Matatini stage for the Pounamu Arena. Can he adapt his skills to connect with his horse and keep in step?

EPISODE EIGHT: WEDNESDAY 26 AUGUST – Alien Weaponry – The internationally acclaimed Māori metal band bring their high-energy presence to the paddock. Accustomed to controlled chaos, will they find harmony—or meet a force louder than themselves?
